Preventive Maintenance Tips to Extend Engine & Alternator Life

Standby generators spend most of their life doing nothing — and that is exactly why they fail. Batteries discharge, fuel degrades, seals dry out and moisture attacks alternator windings. A disciplined preventive maintenance program is the difference between a generator that starts on the first crank and one that lets you down during an outage.

Run the Engine Regularly

Exercise the set under load at least once a month for 30 minutes. This circulates oil, recharges the battery, evaporates moisture from the windings and reveals problems while they are still small. Where possible, use a load bank annually to prevent wet-stacking in diesel engines.

Fluids, Filters and Belts

Follow the engine manufacturer’s service intervals for oil, coolant and filters — and shorten them in dusty or hot environments. Inspect V-belts and hoses for cracking and tension, and keep the fuel system clean: diesel begins to degrade within months, so polish or replace stored fuel and drain water separators regularly.

Care for the Alternator

Keep the alternator clean, dry and ventilated. Check terminal tightness, inspect for signs of overheating and test insulation resistance annually. Space heaters inside the canopy are an inexpensive way to protect windings in humid climates.

Batteries and Controls

Battery failure is the single most common reason a standby set fails to start. Test batteries quarterly, clean terminals, verify the charger output and replace batteries proactively every three to four years.

Keep Records

Log every run, service and alarm. Trends in oil pressure, coolant temperature and vibration tell you about wear long before a breakdown does.
